Is a Similan Islands Day Trip Suitable for Me?

Snorkelling and reef scenes from a Similan Islands day trip

In this guide

Quick answer: A Similan Islands trip best suits travellers who can manage an early start, a substantial speedboat crossing, a full day outdoors and safe boat or water access. The snorkelling trips can work for confident beginners and some non-swimmers who follow the guide and use the required flotation equipment, but they are not suitable for every age, pregnancy or serious medical condition. Scuba day trips and liveaboards require the certification, recent experience and physical readiness stated for the selected diving product.

The Similans are one of the world’s remarkable protected island destinations, and the experience deserves honest preparation. White-sand beaches and clear water are only one side of the day. The other is a very early transfer, open-sea travel, a moving boat, ladders, sun and a schedule shaped by real national-park conditions.

Start with the exact trip

Visit Similan Islands sells four relevant experience types: the Classic snorkelling day trip, the Early Bird snorkelling day trip, a certified-diver scuba day trip and multi-day scuba liveaboards. Suitability is not interchangeable across them.

  • Classic snorkelling: approximately 05:30–06:30 pickup, two guided snorkels, Island 4, Island 8 and a planned 16:50 pier return.
  • Early Bird snorkelling: approximately 04:00–05:00 pickup, two guided snorkels, an earlier Koh Similan visit and an approximate 16:00 pier return.
  • Scuba day trip: two dives for certified divers, with Advanced Open Water or higher and a dive within the previous 18 months required for the active North Andaman programme.
  • Scuba liveaboard: two, three or four days at sea, with six, ten or fourteen dives; the route, cabin, certification and experience checks are completed before payment.

Can non-swimmers join a snorkelling day trip?

A non-swimmer may be able to enjoy the boat, scenery and permitted beach areas, but should not assume that a life jacket turns open-water snorkelling into a swimming-pool activity. The water can be deep, the boat can move, ladders can rise and fall, and waves or current may be present.

Before booking, tell us plainly that a guest cannot swim. During the trip, tell the guide again before the first water stop. Use the required flotation aid, remain within the guided area and skip any session that feels uncomfortable. One-to-one assistance is never implied unless it has been specifically confirmed.

Are the trips suitable for children?

The two snorkelling products use different child rules. The Classic product publishes a child price for ages 4–11. The Early Bird product publishes a child price for ages 4–12 and does not accept infants aged 0–3 for safety and insurance reasons.

Age is only the first check. A child also needs to cope with:

  • a very early alarm and a long day;
  • wearing a life jacket correctly;
  • remaining seated during a lively crossing;
  • following instructions around a boat and beach landing;
  • sun, heat, salt water and unfamiliar food;
  • entering or declining open water without pressure.

Send every child’s age before payment. Do not assume that a child outside the published age band is accepted or free.

Pregnancy, back, heart and serious health conditions

The Early Bird speedboat trip is stated for ages 4–75 and is not suitable during pregnancy or for serious back, heart or health conditions. A speedboat can experience sudden movement and impact even when the sea looks attractive from shore.

For the Classic trip, disclose pregnancy, mobility issues, significant medical conditions and any concern about boat impact before payment so the exact booking can be assessed. Do not rely on general travel insurance as proof that a trip is physically suitable.

Bring essential personal medication in a waterproof bag. If a condition could be affected by motion, heat, sun, exertion or delayed access to mainland care, seek medical advice before choosing an offshore trip.

Mobility and the Island 8 viewpoint

A traveller does not have to climb the Sailing Rock viewpoint to enjoy Koh Similan. The viewpoint is optional and depends on access and conditions. It involves steep, uneven ground, steps, rocks and narrow sections, so beach time is often the better choice for anyone with limited balance, knee problems or difficulty on rough ground.

Skipping the viewpoint does not remove every mobility demand. Guests may still need to board the speedboat, manage steps or a ladder, walk on sand and cope with movement during the crossing. Tell us about walking aids or assistance needs before booking.

Seasickness and anxiety about boats

The Similans are remote, and both snorkelling days involve an open-sea speedboat crossing. Someone who becomes mildly travel-sick may still enjoy the day with suitable preparation. Someone with severe motion sensitivity or intense boat anxiety should think carefully before committing.

Ask a pharmacist or doctor about an appropriate remedy and when to take it. Eat the included breakfast sensibly, stay hydrated, follow seating instructions and focus on the horizon when possible. Avoid treating a calm promotional photograph as a forecast for your travel date.

Swimming confidence and snorkelling ability

You do not need advanced snorkelling technique to enjoy the two guided sessions, but comfort in open water makes the experience easier. The guide controls the entry, area and return signal. Fins, flotation equipment and instruction are provided as stated for the selected product.

Good participation means remaining close to the group, never standing on coral, keeping fins controlled and returning promptly when signalled. Wildlife sightings are a privilege rather than an inclusion; never chase a turtle, fish or ray for a photograph.

Who should choose the Classic trip?

The Classic Similan Islands trip suits travellers who want the established full-day programme with two snorkels, lunch and beach time on Island 4, Island 8 and the viewpoint option. Its pickup is early, but later than Early Bird.

Choose it because that timetable and route fit your group—not because you assume it is a short or physically passive day.

Who should choose Early Bird?

The Early Bird trip suits travellers who actively value reaching Koh Similan ahead of the main daytime rush and are comfortable with pickup at approximately 04:00–05:00. It includes two snorkels, lunch around Koh Miang and a planned pier return around 16:00.

It is a poor fit for anyone whose enjoyment would be undermined by the extremely early start, or whose age or health falls outside its published suitability conditions.

Scuba day-trip suitability

The active North Andaman scuba day trip is for Advanced Open Water divers or higher who have dived within the previous 18 months. It is a long day with an early transfer, an offshore speedboat connection and two dives.

Certification alone is not enough if confidence, buoyancy, health or recent experience is weak. Send your certification level and last-dive date before choosing. If the stated experience requirement is not met, contact us before payment rather than booking and hoping it can be resolved on the day.

Liveaboard suitability

The two-, three- and four-day liveaboards are designed for certified divers who want six, ten or fourteen dives and are comfortable sleeping at sea. They remove the repeated daily mainland transfer, but add consecutive diving, cabin life and limited access to shore.

Before payment, we check dates, trip length, route, cabin choice, certification, last dive and equipment needs. The best duration is not automatically the longest; it is the one that matches the diver’s experience, energy and holiday plan.

Frequently asked questions

Can I join and stay on the boat during a snorkelling stop?

That may be possible within the day’s safety instructions, but it should be discussed with the guide. Do not assume every stop or boat position allows unrestricted movement.

Is the viewpoint compulsory?

No. Sailing Rock is optional and subject to access and safe conditions.

Can I book if I have not dived for more than 18 months?

Do not book the current scuba day trip without discussing it first. The active programme requires a dive within the previous 18 months.

Are the trips suitable during pregnancy?

The Early Bird speedboat trip is not suitable during pregnancy. Pregnancy must also be disclosed before considering the Classic speedboat trip.

How do I request a suitability check?

Send the exact trip, travel date, hotel, ages, swimming confidence, mobility or medical concerns and—when scuba diving—certification and last-dive date through Visit Similan Islands WhatsApp. We will check suitability before the payment step.
