The best place to stay depends on the rest of your holiday, not only the Similan Islands.
If the Similans are your main priority, Khao Lak is usually the easiest base. If you want to stay in Phuket, the northern half of the island gives you a more convenient transfer. If your holiday also focuses on Phi Phi, the Racha Islands or scuba day boats from Chalong, southern Phuket may be more practical even though the Similan pickup is earlier.
Quick answer
| Your holiday priority | Best base to consider | Main trade-off |
|—|—|—|
| Similan and Surin trips | Khao Lak | Less convenient for Phuket nightlife and southern-island trips |
| Similans plus a Phuket beach holiday | Mai Khao, Nai Yang, Nai Thon, Bang Tao, Surin or Kamala | Longer Similan transfer than Khao Lak, but easier than southern Phuket |
| Phi Phi, Racha, Coral Island or Chalong scuba boats | Patong, Karon, Kata, Chalong, Rawai or Nai Harn | Earlier and longer road transfer for the Similans |
| A mixed one- or two-week holiday | Split stay between Khao Lak and Phuket | Requires one hotel change but reduces repeated long transfers |
Why Khao Lak is usually best for the Similans
Similan day boats normally depart from the Thap Lamu area in Phang Nga. Khao Lak is on the same mainland coast and is much closer to that departure point than most Phuket hotels.
The advantages are:
- Shorter road transfer before and after a long sea day
- Later or case-by-case pickup compared with many Phuket zones
- Easier access to other north-Andaman trips
- A quieter beach-holiday atmosphere
Khao Lak is the strongest recommendation for travellers planning several Similan, Surin or liveaboard activities.
Your exact Khao Lak pickup time depends on your hotel and will be confirmed after booking.
Best Phuket areas for a Similan day trip
If you want to remain in Phuket, the north and north-west are the most logical choices.
Mai Khao, Nai Yang and Nai Thon
These areas are close to Phuket Airport and the bridge to the mainland. They reduce the road journey compared with the far south of the island.
They suit:
- Travellers arriving or leaving through Phuket Airport
- Couples and families wanting a quieter beach
- Guests taking one Similan day trip without needing Patong nightlife
Bang Tao, Laguna and Surin
These areas offer more restaurants, resorts and beach choices while remaining in the northern half of Phuket.
They are a useful compromise for travellers who want:
- A comfortable Phuket resort base
- Easier access north for the Similans
- Reasonable access to other parts of Phuket
Kamala
Kamala is farther south but still more convenient for the mainland than Kata, Rawai or Nai Harn. It works well for travellers who want a relaxed west-coast base with access to Patong when required.
When southern Phuket is the better choice
Do not move your whole holiday north for one day trip if most of your plans are in southern Phuket.
Patong, Karon, Kata, Chalong, Rawai and Nai Harn are better positioned for:
- Phi Phi Islands day trips
- Racha Yai and Racha Noi trips
- Coral Island
- Many Phuket scuba-diving day boats
- Chalong Pier departures
- Southern viewpoints, restaurants and beaches
The trade-off is a very early pickup and a long return after the Similan day. Pickup can begin around 05:30–06:00 in several southern areas; your exact time will be confirmed after booking.
Should I split my holiday?
A split stay is often the best answer for travellers doing several island trips.
For example:
1. Stay in Khao Lak for the Similans, Surin Islands or a northern liveaboard.
2. Move to Phuket for Phi Phi, Racha, scuba day trips, restaurants and onward travel.
This reduces the number of predawn minivan journeys and makes each part of the holiday more relaxed.
What about Phuket Town?
Phuket Town is an excellent cultural and food base, but it is not the closest choice for the Similans or the southern beaches. It can work for travellers with a broader itinerary who do not mind an early pickup.
Before booking a hotel
Send us the hotel’s full name and map location before making a non-refundable reservation if the trip transfer is important.
Hotels can have similar names, and a hotel marketed as “Phuket” may be well outside the normal free pickup zone. Villa access, steep roads and narrow lanes may require a meeting point on a main road.
The simplest recommendation
- Choose Khao Lak if the Similans are one of the main reasons for your holiday.
- Choose northern Phuket if you want the Similans plus a Phuket resort stay.
- Choose southern Phuket if Phi Phi, Racha or Phuket scuba trips matter more and you accept one long Similan transfer day.
- Split your stay if you want the best of both areas.
Send your intended hotel and travel date on WhatsApp before booking. We will check the current pickup route and tell you whether it is practical.
